We’re thrilled to be premiering the new single “Come On Back For Good” from St. Louis alt-country artist Adam Gaffney, heading overseas for this raw, remorse-soaked road song ahead of its release this Thursday — a track that leans into self-reflection and hard-earned honesty.
Adam Gaffney writes country songs that don’t look away from the hard parts.
Built on a driving country rock backbone, “Come On Back For Good” is a song of rejection and reckoning, asking the uncomfortable question of “is it me?” and ultimately finding the answer to be yes. Gaffney’s weathered vocal delivery gives weight to lines like, “I would drive all night / Chasin’ down the Missouri state line”, grounding the song’s sense of longing in something vividly real and recognisable.
There’s a familiar grit here that will resonate with fans of roots-driven country rock, but the track never feels overworked or self-indulgent. Instead, it carries a looseness and restraint that allows the emotion to breathe, with guitar and pedal steel stepping in just enough to leave a mark before pulling back again. The guitars on this are truly beautiful. The vocals are imbued with passion and honesty.
Speaking about the track, Gaffney says:
“‘Come On Back For Good’ is one of the more ‘poppy’ songs I think that I’ve written. Maybe the only one. Ha! Austin [Jones] plays in D, so he gets some cool sounds with his guitar. I wanted a baritone sound on it and he was able to give this deep sounding riff that almost sounds like he’s slapping and plucking the guitar… Kenny [Kendell Scott] is just getting after it on the pedal steel. I think he said this is his favourite track on the record.
I’d been going through a lot of bad dating experiences at the time I wrote this. I was at the peak of my alcoholism and I wasn’t really functioning on all cylinders. I was really just looking for people to drink with instead of an actual connection. That time was all a bit of a blur… One of my favourite lyrics is, ‘Time and time again / This is always how it ends / Lovers I thought were my friends.’ It’s really vulnerable to me.”
Lyrically, “Come On Back For Good” was written during a particularly turbulent period in Gaffney’s life, shaped by job loss, failed relationships and addiction. “I lost a job and got dumped at the same time,” he explains. “There just comes a time when you’ve had enough of your life being shitty. I wrote this right before I stopped drinking. I told myself that I’m going to change one thing every day.”
The track appears on Gaffney’s forthcoming album Product of Another Sad Song, due out on 8th May — a deeply personal collection that explores grief, love, loss and sobriety through unguarded storytelling and lived-in country arrangements. While the album digs into some heavy terrain, “Come On Back For Good” stands out as a moment of restless momentum, pairing emotional weight with forward motion.
Unguarded and deeply human, “Come On Back For Good” stands as a powerful standalone release — a road song heavy with remorse, but also quietly hinting at change on the horizon.
“Come On Back For Good” is out on 9th April.
