In a city already bursting with energy, colour and larger-than-life personalities, it takes a particularly special creature to stand out. Enter Kaboom, a fluffy pink force of magical chaos who descends upon New York City in ChikaBoom!, a delightfully inventive animated short that combines heart, humour and a striking visual style.
At its centre is Chika Batstone (voiced by Yara Shahidi), an aspiring young magician struggling to master a simple disappearing ball trick. The challenge feels even greater given that her father is the world-famous magician The Amazin’ Arnie (Daveed Diggs), leaving Chika wrestling with the pressure of living up to a seemingly impossible legacy. It’s a relatable setup that grounds the film’s more fantastical elements in something emotionally authentic: the fear that everyone else already possesses the magic we are still searching for within ourselves.
When Chika’s curiosity gets the better of her and she opens a mysterious jar containing an irresistible spark, she accidentally unleashes Kaboom (Natasha Lyonne), a mischievous pink cloud of fluff whose arrival turns New York into a playground of magical mayhem. What follows is a fast-moving adventure packed with visual gags, infectious energy and escalating chaos that never loses sight of its emotional core.
The film’s animation is its greatest asset. Blending hand-drawn 2D artistry with CG animation and generative techniques, writer/director c. Craig Patterson creates a vibrant hybrid aesthetic that feels fresh without ever becoming distracting. The mix of styles mirrors the unpredictability of its title character, resulting in imagery that feels constantly in motion. Every frame is packed with personality, transforming familiar New York landmarks into a colourful canvas for Kaboom’s antics.
Lyonne proves a perfect vocal match for the title creature, injecting the character with a playful irreverence that makes even its most destructive moments endearing. Shahidi, meanwhile, brings warmth and vulnerability to Chika, ensuring audiences remain invested in her journey beyond the spectacle.
What ultimately elevates ChikaBOOM! above being merely a visually impressive exercise is its simple but effective message. While Chika initially believes she needs to emulate her father’s talents to succeed, the film gently reminds younger viewers that their greatest strength lies in embracing what makes them unique. It’s a familiar lesson, perhaps, but one delivered with sincerity and enough charm to avoid feeling overly sentimental.
Short, sweet and bursting with imagination, ChikaBOOM! is an entertaining family-friendly short that celebrates curiosity, individuality and the magic that exists within all of us. Much like its irresistible pink troublemaker, it’s difficult not to be won over by its infectious spirit.
