New Music Discoveries 11th November: Stevan, Jen Cloher, Chutney, and more

Stevan

Our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music has been updated this week with a further ten tracks, including three exclusive premieres. Our track of the week is “Driving” and comes from singer/songwriter Stevan.  We’ve been a big fan of Stevan since he burst onto the scene in 2019.

Stevan is a self-taught producer, a multi-instrumentalist and a talented singer/songwriter who seemingly has an endless stream of ideas for new tracks. On “Driving”, he has incorporated some gentle keyboards to complement his smooth vocals. About the song, Stevan writes: “Driving is a song about a long-distance relationship. The car itself being a metaphor for the pursuit of that relationship. This closes the chapter of the car themes that have been central to my singles this year. Classic love song type beat. Soft pianos a nice groove and some smooth melodies. I think this one’s gonna go crazy.”

Jen Cloher has released “Mana Takatāpui”, the first single from her upcoming album I Am The River, The River Is Me, out on the 3rd March. It’s a beautiful song, with a potent background. Jen describes the meaning behind the song “‘Takatāpui is the Māori word meaning a devoted partner of the same sex {..} ..  I marvelled at the idea of one word that could explain my sexuality, gender and cultural identity..”

Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Bec Stevens has today released “A Stranger” and announced that her upcoming album BIG WORRY will be released on 17th March 2023. The track encapsulates the feelings of falling hard for someone, the early heady stages of a new relationship. It’s a passionate slice of indie rock, and I’d have a little wager that this will get plenty of airplay.

“Marigold” is the second single from Birds are better, the brainchild of Norwegian singer-songwriter Stian Fjelldal. “Marigold” is a wonderful slice of alt-folk; one which fuses the traditional with sophisticated contemporary elements. Instrumentally it draws the listener in nicely, whilst it’s all complemented by a delightfully rich and calming vocal. Keep an eye out for the project’s debut English LP next year.

4ever lost are the latest in a long line of musical enigmas. The group was formed in 2020, but the identity of the quartet remains a mystery, with the four known only as Six, Hero, Oni and Abi. Their latest single is “Why’d You Do It?” – an absolute ear worm, that just exudes joy and light. It’s pop/RnB songwriting at its most joyful and eclectic.

“Nightbirds” is taken from Citrus Quarters, the new album from Sun Airway (Jon Barthmus). The album is inspired by the Laurel Canyon scene of the late 60s and the CIA conspiracy theories surrounding it. As you would expect for anything inspired by the 60s “Nightbirds” is bright, vibrant and shimmery. There’s some lovely dreamy, shifting vocals and just a little hint of some pedal steel throughout.

We’ve also added “Dream in a While”, from locals Chutney, and three premieres.
