Exclusive Single Premiere: Max Aurora & The Southern Lights “How I Know It’s Right” (2026)

Max Aurora & The Southern Lights

There’s a rush of clarity that can come from stepping out of the wreckage of a fractured relationship, and Naarm/Melbourne outfit Max Aurora & The Southern Lights channel that feeling with real force on their new single “How I Know It’s Right”. We are delighted to be premiering this indie-punk anthem ahead of its release this Thursday,  the 23rd of April.

When we last covered the band back in 2023, it was around the release of their debut single “How I Missed Home”, a track steeped in nostalgia and longing. On “How I Know It’s Right”, they return with a sharper, more urgent sound, folding dreamy indie rock into the punch and immediacy of pop-punk and emo.

Led by intersex/non-binary songwriter Max Aurora, the band has built a reputation for emotionally intelligent, narrative-driven songwriting, often stepping into different perspectives with empathy and detail. That instinct remains at the core of “How I Know It’s Right”, but this time it arrives wrapped in a louder, more explosive arrangement that feels restless in all the right ways.

Produced by Cry Club’s Jono O’Toole, “How I Know It’s Right” captures the emotional whiplash that can follow heartbreak: relief, uncertainty, hope and the sudden possibility of something healthier waiting on the other side. With a ripping melodic core, driving guitars and emotive songwriting, “How I Know It’s Right” pulls you in and refuses to let go.

That intensity is carried by the tight interplay between the band members. Jack Eden’s overdriven guitar riffs tear through the mix, while Sonja Downs’ punchy drumming and Damon Brammall’s gritty basslines keep the track grounded and driving forward. Against it all, Max Aurora’s melodic hooks and considered vocal delivery give the song its emotional centre.

Speaking about the single, Max shares: “Written in a single night, ‘How I Know It’s Right’ explores the quiet relief of leaving a fractured relationship and the curiosity of what a wholesome love could feel like. It explores the urgent, wide-eyed wonder of what a truly wholesome connection feels like, and the restless patience in searching for it.”

With winners’ credentials from Melbourne’s Women in Music mentorship for their 2023 debut single, and more new music promised in 2026, Max Aurora & The Southern Lights feel like a band moving into a confident new chapter. On “How I Know It’s Right”, they turn heartbreak into something urgent, hook-filled and full of forward motion.
