Exclusive Single Premiere: Romanie “Fake Friends” (2021)

Romanie

Melbourne based singer/songwriter Romanie is about to release her latest single, “Fake Friends”. This follows on from ” I’m Anything (But Myself Around You).” which was released back in February this year. This is a beautiful track acknowledging that perhaps we aren’t always being the best friend that we could be.  We are thrilled today to have the exclusive premiere of “Fake Friends” ahead of its release on Friday.

Romanie’s vocals are pure and direct. The lyrics are poignant, the melody gorgeous and the song has an appealing honesty to it. The production is confident and assured, with her captivating vocals gliding above the strident percussion. They work together in tandem seamlessly.

Hailing from Belgium and moving to Australia in 2019, it’s possible that the geographical dislocation contributed to the content of the song. Of the inspiration for the track, Romanie says, “I’ve always valued friendship as one of the best things in life, and it’s heartbreaking people sometimes just lose contact for whatever reason. I feel like I have felt like a fake friend at certain moments in life when I’m not being in touch enough or when I want to help a friend but don’t exactly know how or what to say. Sometimes we’re too caught up in our own lives that we don’t see when a friend is in need of a conversation.

I definitely want this song to be a reminder to be good to each other always, and I’d like to tell all my friends I love them dearly.”

Romanie cites as inspirations artists such as Lucy Rose, Julia Stone and Phoebe Bridgers. It also reminded me of recent releases by KIT (Katie Wighton).

The track was produced by James Seymour (Feelds, Merpire) and mastered by Isaac Barter.
