Brisbane singer-songwriter Shumo AG is only 14, which makes his new single, “Young Boy Young Girl”, all the more impressive. He wrote, performed and produced it himself, and it tells the funny, awkward story of a first crush and a mum who thinks the girl is trouble. We’re delighted to bring you the exclusive premiere ahead of its release this Friday, 6 November.
The guitars are the star here. The Latin-inspired acoustic lines are terrific, adding warmth and energy against the electronic basslines and punchy percussion. Shumo has a great instinct for rhythm, and the dance-pop chorus is ridiculously catchy. You’ll be moving before you’ve realised it.
Put his age aside and it still stands up. This is bright, fun pop with a huge hook and plenty of personality, and you’ll want to play it again as soon as it finishes.
He already has more than 700,000 followers across social media and has been mentored by Sheppard, co-writing a new song with them in their studio. And he’s still only 14.
