The Toronto International Film Festival has officially kicked its 2026 line-up into high gear, unveiling its Gala and Special Presentations slate – and if the opening announcement hinted at an awards-heavy year, this latest wave confirms TIFF is once again pulling together one of the year’s most exciting collections of international cinema.
Following the previously announced Opening Night Film Being Heumann, the world premieres of Prima Facie, The Assassin(s), Alpha Gang, Love of Your Life, Glaxo, The Housewife and Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, TIFF has now revealed dozens more titles spanning nearly 30 countries, from prestige dramas and documentaries to ambitious auteur works and crowd-pleasing studio fare.
Among the biggest draws is Peter Farrelly‘s I Play Rocky, making its World Premiere in the Special Presentations programme. The film charts the making of one of cinema’s greatest underdog stories, while John Madden‘s Onwards and Sideways and Chris Rock‘s directorial return with Misty Green are also set to debut as Gala Presentations.
Music fans have plenty to celebrate too, with Sue Kim‘s documentary Always Lalisa offering a look at BLACKPINK superstar Lisa, while Lauren Miller Rogen‘s Babies and Courteney Cox‘s Evil Genius add even more star power to the Gala programme.
On the international front, TIFF continues to flex its reputation as a home for world cinema. Pedro Almodóvar returns with Bitter Christmas, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi brings All of a Sudden, Hirokazu Kore-eda premieres Look Back, Mike Leigh arrives with Tender Loving Care, Cristian Mungiu unveils Fjord, Lee Chang-dong returns with Possible Love, and Danny Boyle‘s latest film, Ink, will receive its Canadian Premiere.
Genre fans are equally well served. South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) premieres his latest thriller Paradise Lost, while Takashi Miike returns with Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo. Norwegian filmmaker Hans Petter Moland will debut Growth of the Soil, and Andrey Zvyagintsev brings Minotaur.
TIFF is also welcoming back some familiar faces. Jesse Eisenberg returns with The Debut, his follow-up behind the camera after the hugely acclaimed A Real Pain, while Rebel Wilson is back with Girl Group, following her directorial debut The Deb, which premiered at TIFF in 2024. It’s another reminder that the Festival continues to champion filmmakers returning with bold new work as much as it celebrates first-time voices.
Canada also has plenty to celebrate, with Michael Dowse‘s The Stunt Driver, Mina Shum‘s Whatcha Want, Adrian Buitenhuis‘ Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story, and Vinnie Karetak and Jaap van Heusden‘s In Alaska among the homegrown premieres.
Adding a fittingly Canadian finish to the Festival, TIFF has also confirmed its Closing Night Gala will be Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend. Directed by Yan Lanouette Turgeon, the biographical sports drama chronicles the early career of legendary Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve before his rise to international fame.
“This year’s Gala and Special Presentations reflect the extraordinary breadth of contemporary filmmaking,” TIFF said in announcing the slate, with films ranging from intimate character studies and prestige literary adaptations through to large-scale crowd-pleasers and documentaries spotlighting cultural icons.
The 51st Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 10th to 20th 2026, with TIFF: The Market making its debut alongside the Festival from September 10th – 16th. Additional programme announcements, including Discovery, Platform, Midnight Madness and documentary selections, are expected over the coming days.
