Track of the Day: Joel James “Movie Kind of Timing” (2020)

Melbourne artist Joel James, who is becoming increasingly known for his cathartic live performances, has released a sentimental new power ballad by the name of “Movie Kind of Timing”, striking close to the high-flying emotive pop of bands like Imagine Dragons.

A soft silky piano melody pulled out to reveal a bleeding, achingly vulnerable chorus of anthemic vocals and pounding drums? Yep, that’s classic power ballad right there, and James throws it out in abundance, paying homage to a “movie-like” romance with a strong lyrical performance.

As he describes, the song was inspired by an “imagined movie moment” during the COVID-19 pandemic, which adds an extra layer of desperation and drama on top of what already sounds like the crescendo of an indie rom com.
