Western Australia continues to give birth to bands that you must listen to. The latest on this long list is DICE, a band of four young lads from Perth who are making waves with their melodic rock featuring big choruses, jangly guitars and lyrics that resonate strongly with their generation.
They have just dropped their second EP, Time Will Tell, the follow up to their stellar 2022 debut EP, Adolescent Arcade. Get on board with this band that was formed as recently as 2021. Their musicianship is class, and the songwriting tackles those big topics that are felt by many but often not discussed openly enough.
The band did well with their debut EP. They scored #133 on the Triple J Hottest 200 with the breezy “Double Espresso”. They are currently in the midst of a national tour to celebrate the launch of the new record. There are still a few dates left, with them visiting Melbourne this Friday (26th May) and finishing up in Perth on the 10th June. The full details are below.
As with their debut record, Time Will Tell was mixed and mastered at Tone City Studios by Sam Ford (POND, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Birds Of Tokyo, Abbe May).
Do press <play>, crank up the volume and get a taste of the latest offering from one of Western Australia’s brightest.
DICE – Eyes Ahead EP – Track by Track
“Eyes Ahead”
“Eyes Ahead” was the first track written from Time Will Tell and was constructed on the couch of our Melbourne apartment on our first tour in May 2022. Going through a period of time where the band was evolving and finding ourselves through our new drummer Lenny, Ben wanted to write a song about looking forward and striving to achieve your full potential. The lyrics and chords of the song were finished before we had the chance to jam the song which meant we could really experiment with different structures and tempos when we got back to the studio in Perth! Recorded over 2 days, the heavy guitar riffs and driving drums make this song energetic from the get go. Fun fact it’s actually the fastest song we have at 180bpm! It has become a band favourite to play live and hearing people sing it back on the tour has been a crazy experience given it’s the short time it’s been out
“Stockholm”
Our latest single, “Stockholm” is a Gen-Z take on the concept of Stockholm Syndrome. The track’s lyrics delve into the intrusive thoughts that arise when you feel trapped within a group of people whose morals and values don’t align with yours. You are challenged to break out of the safety of being in “the group” by looking further than the on-the-surface appearance. A line from the song quotes, “we’re rinsing off the counterfeit to unfold, untie the lies of it all”.
“Pieces”
Aligned with the EP title, ‘Time Will Tell’, the track opens up the conversation of mental health, especially in young men. Inspired by our own experiences, friends, family and many local charities, we want to push the idea for people to talk about their mental health to start a conversation. “Pieces of you, pieces of me. Scattered over planets with no solid degree”, a statement which expresses that no one is alone and starting the conversation will create a positive outcome in time.
“Tough Love”
“Tough Love” is an empowering statement of self love and self care. Portrayed through the story of a relationship in which you know you feel drained or losing yourself, sometimes the hard decisions must be made to better yourself and time will tell the benefits. “It’s a cost I can keep bitter sweet, there’s safety in the distant cold”.
“Silky Blends and Lemonade”
“Silky Blends and Lemonade” is a track made as proof that creativity is limitless and tailored to your unique personality and style. This track is all about tacos, portrayed as a temptation and delight, something you wait for in the week. As we have learnt, we want to encourage everyone to test their creativity and have no expectation of work. You never know what you might create!
