Sydney alt-rock outfit Verdani are preparing to release their debut EP, The Illusion Is Gone, tomorrow, and today we’re giving you an exclusive first listen.
Across four tracks, Verdani move between romantic vulnerability, simmering anger and existential reflection, wrapping weighty themes in dark, atmospheric arrangements. Drawing on post-punk, gothic rock, art rock and baroque influences, the EP is driven by haunting melodies, dramatic shifts and an underlying sense of hope, even at its most melancholic.
“Welcome My Fate” begins from a place of emotional uncertainty, exploring the fear that can accompany falling in love and the happiness that becomes possible once those defences are lowered. From there, the record grows sharper and more confrontational, particularly on the blistering “Can’t Feel Sorry”, before closing with the expansive and deeply reflective “In a Lifetime”.
At the heart of the EP is the propulsive focus track “Stories of Love”. Both cautionary and uplifting, it warns of the dangers and difficult characters we encounter while encouraging the listener to recognise their own strength.
With its coiled tension, propulsive pace and cinematic swagger, “Stories of Love” sounds ready to tear through the middle of a Guy Ritchie film.
Despite its title, The Illusion Is Gone is not a record without optimism. Throughout the EP, Verdani confront fear, betrayal and the consequences of our choices while repeatedly returning to the possibility of connection, resilience and self-acceptance.

“Welcome My Fate”
An emotionally heavy love song from someone who was afraid to love. Despite the persons limitations, barriers and pushing their lover away, their lover overcame their resistance which is welcomed by the protagonist.
It is a song about connection, despite fears around expectations and how ultimately if love is accepted then happiness is possible.
“Stories of Love”
Fast paced song that warns the listener of the perils that await in the journey of life. It also warns of people trying to take advantage of you and the importance of being mindful of other’s intentions.
However, ultimately it contains a message of hope and optimism that the listener will prevail. The author believes that listener is amazing and that they will shine a light on themselves and show the world how fantastic they are.
“Can’t Feel Sorry”
It is a vitriolic song against people who are nasty individuals who are narcissistic and self-obsessed. However, when things go wrong for them, they expect sympathy and support from the people who they victimised and bullied.
The protagonist is torn between feeling sorry for the person and having empathy, and the realisation that the narcissistic person will never change and will always cause them pain and anguish.
“In a Lifetime”
Verdani’s opus – it’s about life decisions, and the consequences of those decisions – How people make decisions all the time that can cause heartbreak and ruin their lives and other’s lives unintentionally.
The song is also about how the listener despite this needs to be kind to themselves and practice self-love and acceptance in the complexity that is life. That it is a strange time to be alive and all of us are struggling to get through.
