The National have returned to Australia for the the first time since 2018, and last night played at the ICC Sydney Theatre, the first of two shows. It was an incredible gig, with leadsinger Matt Berninger as always stalking and prowling the stage as he brings the tunes alive. You had to feel sorry for the roadie who has to follow him up in the bleaches when he makes his forays into the crowd.
As if The National wasn’t enough to set us up for the weekend, their ‘very special guests’ of Fleet Foxes sounded incredible in the ICC. Their beautiful harmonies and layered musicianship was very special indeed.
Kicking off the night was the fabulous Annie Hamilton, playing solo. Annie is an exceptional songwriter and musician, and it’s great she has this opportunity to showcase her work to larger audiences. Get there early if you are going to any of the remaining shows.
The tour continues with another show at the ICC tonight, before heading to Melbourne, and Perth. Head here for possible tickets.
Bruce was there to bring you these photos.
