Inexplicably it’s August tomorrow, and we’re hurtling ever closer to the end of the year. But, we’ve got ten new tracks to help us see out the month, including two we had premieres for earlier in the week. Perth-based producer and songwriter Josh Ellis takes our Track of the Week with “Rest My Tires” – the utterly charming new single from his Coco Elise solo project.
“Rest My Tires” is the latest single to be released from, the biggest bridge in the world, his freshly announced debut album, which is set for release October 30th. The single is this really lovely, playful and characterful slice of indie folk; it’s bright, full of warped guitars, quirky percussion, all standing in complete juxtaposition to the song’s lyrics – spiralling in an empty apartment, has perhaps never sounded so breezy and joyful.
total tommy returns with “Trapezoid”, the title track from her newly announced second album, Trapezoid, due for release on 23 October. Melbourne-born and Sydney-based, Jess Holt leans further into heavier, guitar-driven territory here, with distortion, grunge and post-punk textures framing a song about embracing imperfection and recognising how the smallest things shape the bigger picture. It is a bold, off-kilter introduction to an album that promises to be brasher, louder and more assured than her acclaimed debut, bruises.
Also added to the playlist this week is “Dogtooth” the title track from Sydney trio Sweetie’s debut album (out September 25th). Surprisingly, given its name, “Dogtooth” is a love song, that’s as vocalist Lily Keenan explains, is “about loving everything, the imperfections, the details, right down to their canines.” It’s a lot of fun, full of jangle, energy, clever songwriting and a catchy af chorus. There’s also a delightfully folk horror adjacent music video to go with it.
“All By Myself” is the lead single from evidence, the debut album of Melbourne artist and musician Spike Fuck – out October 2nd on iconic label Sacred Bones Records. “All By Myself” is a vibe; it’s kind of new wave, kind of glam, all wrapped up in a sort of punky doo-wop production. However, you want to define it genre wise, there’s no denying that it makes for a captivating listen. It even comes with its own thought provoking music video. “Shake It” is the lead single from the forthcoming self-titled debut of Fremantle five-piece GRUB. The band are something of an all-star lineup of West Australian musicians, fronted by songwriter Matilda Beales and featuring Peter Bibby (drums), Edo Ekic (bass), Duncan Strachan (guitar) and Mitch McDonald (guitar). “Shake It” makes for a frenetic introduction to the group, throwing up a captivating blend of garage punk and dark disco vibes. It’s wonderfully idiosyncratic, visceral and beautifully messy. You need to get around this one and get that album pre-ordered.
Singer-songwriter Gretta Ziller brings a touch of Nashville to our playlist this week, with “Breaking Up Ain’t Like The Movies”, her latest single from her Long & Writing Road project. It’s a wonderfully penned, slow-burn slice of alt-country rock, with big vocals, plenty of banjo, and more than enough heartbreak (just not the Hollywood kind).
Melbourne singer-songwriter Lara Buchanan has dropped “Only Once”, an emotionally charged reflection on a relationship that felt all-consuming until its disappointing conclusion. Blending sharp rock edges with soaring pop hooks, the Melbourne singer-songwriter traces the journey from early intimacy to the realisation that promises of lasting love may not have meant quite as much as they seemed. You will be able to catch Buchanan at BIGSOUND in September.
Sisters return with “Guerrilla”, their first new music since last year’s debut EP and a volatile, cathartic step forward for the Liverpool five-piece. Dreamy and intense in equal measure, the track moves between airy, spacious passages and sudden surges of heavy, murky guitars, creating a captivating tension between fragility and force. Arriving as Sisters begin their first UK headline tour, “Guerrilla” feels expansive, disorientating and increasingly assured.
We’ve also added two tracks which we premiered earlier in the week – “Willpower” from ALEIA, and “Memories” from MazZ.
