We’re easing you into May with ten new tracks added to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify, including two tracks we had premieres for earlier in the week. NSW singer-songwriter Mikayla Pasterfield takes home our Track of the Week with her new single, “Voodoo”.
“Voodoo” is the latest track to be released from Pasterfield’s freshly announced debut EP Heritage Listed, which is due on June 13th. Introspective and emotive, “Voodoo” explores feelings of lovelorn desperation, yearning and relationships. According to Pasterfield, the track “centers around the desperation that you experience when all you really want is to be loved by someone but they cannot (or will not) openly express that they share the same feelings.”
It’s a stunning release, one which captivates from the start and continues to highlight Pasterfield’s profound and relatable lyricism. There’s been a fair bit of buzz building around Mikayla and it’s easy to see why. Undoubtedly destined for more now is the perfect time to get acquainted with Mikayla Pasterfield. And if you like what you hear, you can catch her on tour in June supporting Jem Cassar-Daley.
Speaking of Jem Cassar-Daley, she has released her first single of 2025, the stellar “Kiss Me Like You’re Leaving”. Each new release from Jem further entrenches her solid indie-pop credentials. Passionate vocals and a rich and lush production, has this one sparkling with diamonds. She will be embarking on a tour in June, hitting Sydney, Brisbane, Coutts Crossing (Clarence Valley) and Melbourne. Head to her website for all the details.
“Biotope” is the debut single from Ciska Ciska, the alter-ego of Ghent-based singer-songwriter Ciska Dhaenens. The track is a beautiful slice of intimate alt-folk and Americana, with gentle guitar work and a sublime golden vocal, that takes its cues from the likes of Julia Jacklin, Aldous Harding and Adrianne Lenker. A deeply moving and affecting debut.
“Know Yourself” is the latest single to be released from Self Titled, the fifth studio album from acclaimed musician, poet and author Kae Tempest. The album explores Kae as both an artist and as a person, and at its core it’s a love letter to Tempest’s younger self. Nowhere is this more evident than on new single “Know Yourself”, as Tempest explains: ‘It samples a lyric I wrote years ago, where my younger self is talking to their younger self. A dialogue between selves across time, in real time. Or maybe I could put that simpler – When I was young I sought help from my older self. I came into my head, I told me know yourself.’ Bold, empowering and lyrically astute, “Know Yourself” is a welcome reminder of Tempest’s gift for wordplay and a real excitement builder for the new album ahead of the July 4th release.
“Love = Cost “ is the new single from multi-disciplinary artist Clea, and is a golden slice of multi-layered indie-pop. “Love = Cost is a letter to oneself, a call to show up and reckon with the compromise that love demands’ explains Clea.
“Cold Hard Ground” from Salt Tree, is the first single from the WA folk duo since their 2024 Swell EP. It’s an upbeat anthem, filled with beautiful harmonies, sweet guitar, banjo and some lovely harmonica. About the single, the band’s two members, Tom and Nath, share, “‘Cold Hard Ground’ is about the moments when you’re at your lowest, but someone reaches out and lifts you back up. It’s a song about mental health, connection, and the quiet strength that comes from being there for each other. We wrote it as a reminder that even when you’re laid out by life, love can help you stand again.”
Also added to the playlist this week is “Friday On My Mind”, a jangly serving of indie rock from Scottish Celtic folk-rockers Brògeal; and the haunting cello-tinged “feely” from UK ambient jazz group Ebi Soda.
Finally, we have added tracks for two premieres from earlier in the week; “How I Say Goodnight” from Machine on a Break, and “The River Song” from Ghost Medium.
