Earlier this year, we premiered Lucy Burke’s wonderfully atmospheric single “One Way Track”, one of the early tastes of her latest EP, Meet Me There. Now the Sydney singer-songwriter returns with the video for the EP’s title track, and we’re delighted to be premiering it today. The EP marked a new chapter for Burke, pairing organic instrumentation with a warm contemporary sound. “Meet Me There” turns its attention to memory, identity and the places that help shape us.
For the accompanying video, Burke has taken that idea of looking back quite literally, returning to the Waverley Park Water Tower, close to where she grew up in Bondi. It gives the clip an immediate sense of place and history, while its free-flowing performance captures the reflective but ultimately liberating spirit of the song.
Burke explains:
“’Meet Me There’ is the title track of my EP Meet Me There, and a song about the places, people and memories that shape us – and the parts of ourselves we can sometimes lose along the way.
I filmed the video at the Waverley Park Water Tower, close to where I grew up in Bondi. Choosing this location felt deeply personal. It connects me to my childhood, my family and friends, and the beginning of my journey as a musician.
There is also a connection to my debut album, Botany Street. The album cover features me sitting on the same bench I sit on in this video. Botany Street was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, and its title is a homage to Abbey Road and my lifelong love of The Beatles.”
That love of the Beatles runs deep. It feeds into her music, and Burke drew inspiration for the video from another brilliant artist who has inspired so many.
“Visually, I wanted the clip to feel instinctive and unrestrained. I was inspired by Kate Bush and her ability to throw herself completely into a moment – without worrying too much about expectations, rules or how something is “supposed” to look. I wanted to allow that same freedom into the performance and let the location, movement and atmosphere speak for themselves.
That idea of returning to where we began has become a thread through this chapter of my music. The Beatles influence that began with Botany Street and Abbey Road also continues into my upcoming Beatles-inspired show at Paddo RSL on Saturday 24 October, where my band and I will be reimagining Beatles classics alongside my own music.
For me, Meet Me There is about coming full circle – reconnecting with the places and memories that made us who we are, while giving ourselves permission to move forward without being defined by them.”
That upcoming Beatles-inspired show follows a sold-out performance, with Burke returning to Paddo RSL on 24 October for an encore in the venue’s larger main auditorium. The show will mix reimagined Beatles favourites with Burke’s own material, drawing on jazz, acoustic and contemporary arrangements. Get along if you can and support live music. Ticket links below. Burke will also be performing at Manly Fig this Friday night (25th September) and at the Factory Theatre in Sydney on 12 December.
There’s a lovely circularity to “Meet Me There”. A familiar location, a bench connecting two releases, and an artist looking back without getting stuck there. The result is a personal and quietly expressive video that complements the song beautifully.
We’re delighted to premiere the video for “Meet Me There” today.
