Live Review: Backstreet’s Back in Sydney and it’s more than alright (04.03.23)

Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys have been waiting three years to finish off their DNA World Tour. And, for those fans who have been holding on to their tickets it was more than worth the wait.

Cementing themselves as the best-selling boy band of all time, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson took to the stage at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney in an epic display of nineties nostalgia.

Of course, the band played hits from their ninth studio album DNA. But, it was clear that they knew who their audience are and why they were there. Original hits from their 1996 album like “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” and “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” were peppered amongst chart–topping classics like “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “I Want It That Way”.

The staging, lighting and choreography were incredible, with the band’s perfectly synchronised moves reflecting those performed more than twenty years ago. And for anyone wondering if their vocals can still hit those high notes, a stunning a cappella number proved these boys still have a talent and a bond that stands the test of time.

But, the thing is – they’re not boys anymore. After almost thirty years as a band and twenty-seven years since the release of their first studio album, the boys we once knew are now men with families of their own. The crowd was given a candid look into their lives now with footage of their partners and children while performing “No Place”. It was a beautiful reminder that we’re all a little older now, but that the power of music lies in its ability to transport you.

It’s amazing to think these five men have been in each other’s lives for thirty years. And, that camaraderie and history played out on stage as they joked around and playfully mocked each other. There was a deep sense of gratitude from the band that felt entirely genuine. And, it was amazing to see them signing autographs and taking selfies with fans as they sung.

At times, the backing music – in particular the bass – overpowered the vocals. But, it was a minor blip in an otherwise flawless production.

The emotion from the audience was overwhelming. Favourite lyrics were sung with so much passion they almost drowned out the voices on stage. Perhaps it was the built-up anticipation; perhaps it was the wave of nineties nostalgia which transported me back to being thirteen. Or perhaps it was the talent of five exceptional performers who promised they would be back. Again. I for one, cannot wait.
