Exclusive Video Premiere: Bella Deer “Bloom” (2022)

Bella Deer

It’s always exciting when the debut recording from an artist lands in our inbox. We landed a gem this time, in the form of “Bloom” from Victoria’s Bella Deer. This time, the first song off the rank is very much the finished product. “Bloom” is a a seismic banger of a tune. We’re thrilled today to have the first look at the video ahead of its release tomorrow.

Bella has a voice pure and powerful with an impressive range. At nearly 4 minutes, “Bloom” has a vibrant energy, with a melodic wave that surges constantly throughout. There’s a bold and plucky earnestness to the verses as the protaganist confronts feelings of doubt, interspersed with the chorus that it joyful and euphoric.

To celebrate the release of “Bloom”, Bella has some launch shows at Heathcote, Ballarat and Fyansford in late October/early November. Details are below.

About the song, Bella writes: “This song is about struggling with self confidence and mustering the courage to simply be yourself and accepting who you are and what you stand for. When you start to do this, you find that you’re accepted despite those fears. It also explores the frustrations with the lack of meaningful human connections in our society in a tech obsessed world.”

“Bloom” was written in 2019 just before the pandemic set in. It has proved to be somewhat prescient and all the more relevant, with the physical disconnection that was forced upon us all during these difficult times.

About the video, Bella told the AU, “The Bloom video explores the power of bright colour and light; it symbolises moving away from inner darkness and doubt that has been staring back at you in the mirror for quite some time.”

The video for “Bloom” was filmed in Ceres in Victoria, and was directed by James Duggan of True South FilmJoel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, MEG MAC) helped out with production and mixing, and Stuart Hawkes of Metropolis mastered the track.

This might be the first song to be released under the Bella Deer moniker, but Bella has previously worked with the likes of Husky Gawenda, Thando and Emma Donovan and The Putbacks.

Fans of HAIM, Caroline Polachek and Weyes Blood should be vibing on this one. Enjoy the first look at the video from a very exciting artist indeed.
