Exclusive Single Premiere: Turpentine Babycino “Calamity” (2023)

Turpentine Babycino

We’re thrilled that the first slice of new music to be served up by the AU for 2023 is from newcomers Turpentine Babycino. The Mulubinba/Newcastle-based indie-punk rockers launched their debut track late in 2022 with the awesome gritty and catchy “Write A Song Sounds Shit”. Today we have the premiere of “Calamity”, an emotive salve for anyone who has been wronged in a relationship.

“Calamity” starts explosively, with ripping guitars, emotive vocals and a driving beat. With a keen turn of phrase, catchy hooks and deftly scaling it back at times to give the emotive storyline the opportunity to shine, this is a cracking tune. Fans of Tired Lion and WAAX should find plenty to love about this.

If you’ve been bunkering down since New Year, recovering from the excesses of what went on previous, then this is just the track to get you up and amongst it again. “Calamity” is a ripper.

Lead singer and frontwoman Georgie Winchester writes of the track: “Gabe, our drummer, wrote the music for this song and it was my job to create a story with the lyrics and melody. The music was very energetic and kinda agro which spurred a sleeping monster – memories of my days at college university. I was reading a book at the time in which I found the word ‘calamity’ meaning ‘an event causing great and often sudden damage or distress; a disaster’. This is exactly what happened during my time at college after getting mixed up in a passionately toxic relationship.

I decided it was my time to finally write about my experience and get the fuck over it through this track. In my mind, I traveled back to those days at uni and felt everything again which was great as I harnessed the emotions and wrote the song in around 30 minutes. As a band, it’s one of our absolute favorite Turpentine tracks as it sounds awesome live and it’s as real as it gets.”

“Calamity” was produced by Sean Cook of Novotone Studios.

Turpentine Babycino will be celebrating the release of “Calamity” by embarking on a fourteen date tour of the East coast of Australia. It kicks off this Sunday night at The Cambridge Hotel in Mulubinba/Newcastle. All the dates are below.

“Calamity” will be released tomorrow, 18th January 2023. You can pre-save it HERE. No doubt there will be plenty more to come from this talented band in 2023. We cant’ wait.
