If you’ve ever found yourself in a relationship that is doomed to failure, but you’re strapped in for the ride, then “Siren”, the new tune from Brisbane-based singer/songwriter John Drake should resonate strongly. We’re pumped to be premiering this cathartic tune, along with its video, ahead of its release on Friday.
“Siren” has a broad, lush cinematic soundscape. The melancholy nature of the tale is nestled within some beautiful musicianship. His vocals have a clarity and honesty that is gripping, the percussion is neat and tight, and the intensity has just the right amount of light and shade. There’s elements of sweet soulful Americana threaded throughout.
About the track, John writes: “Siren was inspired by a brief relationship I had in London several years back that was built on quicksand, always in a state of flux. It was a constant tightrope walk, one day it was blissful, the next it was like being chained to a sinking ship. I never knew where I was, but it was addictive, exhilarating and painful all at the same time. I remember I had Ryan Adam’s ‘Prisoner’ and Wilco’s ‘A Ghost is Born’ on repeat all throughout that period, forever pontificating the meaning of love and life.”
The track was recorded with ARIA-winning engineer Cody McWaters and his longtime friend and producer, Chass Guthrie. John was a member of the UK band The Dust Coda for many years, and is now working on his debut solo album, Separation Songs. This is the second single from the album, following on from “Ocean”, which was released in April.
