There’s always something special about getting to premiere a debut album — that first full-length statement where a band’s identity, instinct and ambition all come into sharp focus. Today, the AU review is excited to premiere Kiss Me Like Goodbye, the debut album from North Queensland alt-rock outfit Slippery Gypsy, a record built from moments of toxic love, escape, conflict, clarity and connection.
We’re also pleased to bring you an exclusive track-by-track from the band, offering a deeper look into the stories and experiences that shape the record — a collection that feels as raw and lived-in as it does sonically assured.
Across its ten tracks, Kiss Me Like Goodbye captures a band leaning into emotional directness and guitar-driven force, with songs that feel lived-in rather than overworked. There’s a rawness running through the record that gives it its punch, but also a sense of conviction — Slippery Gypsy aren’t dressing these stories up, they’re letting them hit as they are. As the band put it, the album is drawn from “real experiences”, with each track reflecting something “raw, honest, and real.”
Slippery Gypsy have been building strong momentum this year, with recent singles including “Stranger” and “Poison Love” helping set the tone for what the full record delivers: emotionally charged alt-rock with heart, weight and no shortage of hooks. If those singles hinted at the band’s range, Kiss Me Like Goodbye confirms it.
Ahead of the album’s official release this Friday, we’re thrilled to premiere Kiss Me Like Goodbye in full today on the AU review — alongside this exclusive track-by-track from the band.
Track by track: Slippery Gypsy on Kiss Me Like Goodbye
Kiss Me Like Goodbye is a collection of songs built from real experiences — from toxic love and escape, to clarity, conflict, and connection. Each track came together
in its own way, but all of them reflect moments that feel raw, honest, and real.
“Kiss Me Like Goodbye”
Written as a full experiment in the studio, starting completely from scratch. Once the rhythm locked in, everything else followed naturally. It’s about being in a relationship where appreciation has faded — a reminder to show love, even when the spark isn’t as strong as it once was.
“Stranger”
This song is about meeting a complete stranger and instantly feeling something you can’t explain. One look, one moment, and it just hits. Everything feels familiar even though it shouldn’t. It’s that split second where you’re stuck deciding whether to take the risk and chase it, or freeze and let it pass. Do you roll the dice and see where it goes, or do nothing and wonder forever what might’ve happened — knowing you might never get that chance again.
“Save Me”
Built from an old riff that had been sitting around for years. Once we demoed it, we knew it had something. It’s about being pushed to a breaking point by life and wanting to be pulled back to a
place of innocence.
“Poison Love”
Poison Love is about addiction in all its forms — whether that’s a relationship, a substance, or a pattern you keep running back to even when you know it’s wrecking you. It’s that space between denial and self-awareness — pretending you’re fine while quietly wondering if anyone actually makes it out the other side. Everyone’s had their own version of a poison love, and this one leans into that honesty without dressing it up.
“Clearer Air”
This one changed a lot lyrically, but the core feeling stayed the same. It’s about pushing through when life feels heavy — reminding yourself to breathe, keep going, and trust that there’s clearer air ahead.
“No Secret”
Completely rewritten multiple times before finding its final form in the studio with producer Stuart Stuart. Leaning slightly into a Living Colour lane, it’s about a love that isn’t accepted by others.
“Carry You Away”
The first song we ever wrote together. It started as something completely different — same feel, completely different lyrics. It’s about escape — a love that can take you away from everything else.
“Burn”
A track about toxic love — being completely drawn to someone who, in a twisted way, finds satisfaction in your pain.
“The Cheater”
About knowing your partner is being unfaithful but struggling to confront it. Even when you see it happening, you get pulled under — like being stuck in a rip you can’t escape.
“Run to Me”
About recognising you’re with the wrong person — and knowing deep down you’re meant to be with someone else. It’s that pull toward something real, even when it complicates everything.
