Snitches get empowered: 10 times speaking up is the power move – with Gypsy Lee’s bold new single “Snitches”

Gypsy Lee

We’ve been championing Melbourne artist Gypsy Lee since her debut, and with each release she continues to sharpen her voice – both musically and thematically. With her new single “Snitches”, she leans fully into empowerment, delivering a track that is as playful as it is cutting, and as personal as it is universal.

A preview of her forthcoming EP, “Snitches” marks a confident new chapter – one that trades silence for confrontation, and hesitation for clarity. Bold, hook-driven and unapologetically direct, it’s a statement of intent from an artist stepping firmly into her power.

Written alongside collaborator and producer THRONES (Andrew Lowden), the track emerged from Gypsy Lee’s “first heartbreak” – but rather than wallow in loss, she flips the narrative. Built entirely from layered vocals and percussive elements like handclaps and door slams, the track strips things back sonically while dialling up its punch emotionally.

“I’m not a blow-up doll, a Barbie, or your property. I am completely myself, and I’m not afraid to call you out – or snitch.”

That defiance runs through every line of the song, which pulls no punches lyrically. From calling out toxic behaviour to reclaiming self-worth, “Snitches” captures the moment where frustration turns into action – and silence becomes impossible.

Drawn from Gypsy Lee’s own perspective, this list lays out when you must tell it as it is:

  1. If your friend’s boyfriend is hitting on other girls, be a girls girl – tell your friend.
  2. If your boyfriend is cheating, dump him and write a brutal song about it.
  3. If he’s trying to control how you look, remind him: take it or leave it.
  4. If he suggests cosmetic changes, feel free to suggest a few of your own.
  5. If someone you love is struggling with substance abuse, speak up and get them help.
  6. If your boss crosses a line, call it out immediately.
  7. If your partner is constantly critical, start asking questions – and don’t ignore the answers.
  8. If porn has replaced intimacy in your relationship, it’s time for a conversation.
  9. If someone is spreading rumours about you, confront them directly.
  10. If he’s 22 and still having his laundry done by Mum… run.

It’s a list that mirrors the spirit of the track itself – sharp, funny, and grounded in real-life frustrations. And those frustrations are laid bare in the song’s lyrics, which don’t shy away from naming and shaming bad behaviour, turning betrayal into something communal and cathartic.

Accompanying the single is a video directed by Glen Wilk, which captures both the playful chaos and the track’s underlying message. It’s another layer in Gypsy Lee’s growing artistic identity – one that embraces contradiction: fun and messy, vulnerable and defiant.

“I can be fun, I can be messy, I can be ugly, I can be your dream girl. What I won’t be, however, is silent.”

Since her 2024 debut EP, Pretty In The Dark, Gypsy Lee has evolved from a buzzworthy newcomer into a compelling voice in Australia’s indie-pop space. Gypsy has gigs this Thursday (23rd April) and the 9th of May in Melbourne. The dates are below. Get along if you can and support live music.

There is a cameo in the video – I won’t spoil the surprise. I will say it’s an artist I’ve been a fan of seemingly forever.

And if there’s one takeaway? Speaking up might just be the most powerful move of all.
