Album Review: Total Giovanni – Euphoria (2018 LP)

If you aren’t already listening to Total Giovanni, you definitely should be. Following the release of their recent single “Comes in Waves”, the Melbourne group are finally releasing their debut album Euphoriaon Friday. With their music described as “Paradise Garage meets Madchester on the shores of the Mediterranean,” Euphoria is bound to take Australia by storm.

Emerging out of creative experimentation, Total Giovanni is comprised of five old friends with varied backgrounds in music, dance and theatre. Evident in their energetic and electrifying live performances, Total Giovanni have a stage presence like no other. Already considered a phenomenon by many, it’s pretty clear this experiment has been a huge success.

“Everything” is a fun, energetic start to the album, with an almost sci-fi feel and an extremely danceable beat that Total Giovanni have become renowned for. “Your Light” perfectly showcases their super smooth side, bursting into a chorus that makes it impossible to stand still. This track is bound to be a crowd favourite. Drawing on the diverse inspirations that influenced the makings of this record, “Awake” is a funky and psychedelic track, encompassing everything that makes Total Giovanni great. “I See” offers some of the best vocals on the record, backed by an unarguably fantastic beat and instrumentals. The Madchester vibe is definitely evident on this track.

“Akila” is a change of pace that sounds straight out of an episode of The Mighty Boosh while “The Road to Shimeray” provides an insight into the weird and wonderful minds of Total Giovanni. The previously mentioned “Comes in Waves” is a perfect summation of this band, combining the super smooth with the irresistibly danceable to produce a track that, from personal experience, is phenomenal when performed live. Closing the record is “Rain”, a frankly beautiful track that shows a different side to Total Giovanni and delivers an unexpected but remarkable end to Euphoria.

Total Giovanni have catapulted themselves into the hearts of music lovers around the country and show no signs of slowing down. Their popularity ahead of the release of their debut album is a great sign for the Melbourne boys and is bound to increase when Euphoria hits shelves and streaming platforms on Friday. A diverse, thrilling experience through the band’s wonderful creative minds, it’s a record not to be missed.
