New Music Discoveries 25th April: Emily Lubitz, Abby Wallace, Montaigne, and more

Emily Lubitz

As we race towards the final days of April, this week we have added ten new tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Our track of the week goes to Emily Lubitz, with her new single, “Big Time”.

In “Big Time”, Emily has adopted the character of a small-town girl who woos the local cowboys by singing in the local bars. It’s an entrancing and engaging story. The video is mightily fine as well, and was created by Hannah Crofts of All Our Exes Live in Texas fame.
Emily has been enchanting audiences via Tinpan Orange for many years, and has announced that she will be releasing her debut solo LP, Two Black Horses on the 18th of July.

“Big Feet, Bigger Shoes” is the debut single from Abby Wallace, an emerging artist from Lutruwita/Tasmania. It’s a strong opening salvo, one which suggests that Wallace is a star in the making. It’s raw, introspective and lyrically astute, touching on themes of grief, vulnerability, single parenthood, and redemption. It’s one of those tracks that’s undoubtedly deeply personal but takes on a life and meaning beyond the artist. It seems immediately certain this will be the first of many releases from Wallace and we can’t wait to hear more!

For those of you heading to Dark Mofo in June, Wallace will be supporting Thelma Plum at Launceston’s Princess Theatre on June 11th. Tickets are available HERE.

Joe Mungovan is one of the hardest-working independent singer/songwriters in Australia, and each release has that rewarding combination of great melody, sweet guitars and a good story behind it. His latest salvo, “Parachute” is about going headfirst into a relationship even though it is doomed for failure.

The landing could be tough and rough, as Joe writes: “It’s about knowing a relationship is doomed from the get go, but not being able to find the evacuation button before it’s too late. You know you’re going down and there’s no cushion upon landing.”

Beloved Melbourne ensemble Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird make their return this week with their first new music in three years. “Rosewater” is the first taste of the band’s highly anticipated follow up to their acclaimed album Smiles of Earth released in 2022. According to frontman Lachlan Rose, “Rosewater” is a continuation of the band’s explorative forays into emotive storytelling and genre-blending soundscapes. It’s a bit of a  vibey, soulful slow burner. It’s got us excited for the promise of more new music from the band in 2025. But before then, those lucky enough to get tickets can catch the band on their sold out hometown pub shows over the next three weeks.

Sydney’s Montaigne has just dropped “it’s all about the money”, an emotive and visceral track coming from the heart. You can follow Montaigne’s Instagram or become a supporter of their Patreon to get the lowdown on the inspiration for this pulsating single. It was co-produced and written with Wave Racer. They have just announced that their fourth, and first independent album it’s hard to be a fish will be out on the 19th of June.

“You and Me” is the sophomore single from SALVIA, the brainchild of Ukrainian artist Nicole Selivan. Having fled the war in her country, leaving behind a budding music career, Selivan moved to Brussels and started this new solo project. Musically, SALVIA sits within the realms of dark indie, whilst also incorporating elements of post punk and new wave. “You and Me” is very much a continuation of that sound, but with some shoegaze and dream pop vibes mixed in for good measure. Hooky and quite infectious, it’s a lot of fun, and highlights why SALVIA is considered by many as one to watch.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Alright Now”, the new single from multi-disciplinary artist Hayden Calnin; and “Earthquake”, the latest single from Melbourne surf punks Hobsons Bay Coast Guard. The band will be launching the single at Bergy Bandroom on May 3rd. They’re going to be filming the show so make sure you get down and get immortalised in Hobsons Bay Coast Guard history. Tickets available HERE
