Exclusive Video Premiere: The Electorate “The Great Divide” (2025)

The Electorate

Earlier this month, Gadigal/Sydney trio The Electorate released “The Great Divide”, their third single from their upcoming album, By Design. We are super excited to be premiering the video for a track that is laden with emotion, packed with honesty and beautifully vulnerable.

About the track, Josh Morris from the band writes:  “The Great Divide is a song that examines what is means to be in a long term relationship, and what can happen if you stop being honest with yourself, and those you love. It’s about making a mess, and finding your way out of that, through some uncomfortable truths and realisations. To that end, The Great Divide is part confession, part realisation and part map to help navigate your way.”

The song has a nostalgic feel to it, beautiful acoustic guitars, lovely harmonies and crystal clear imagery. You can draw an arc to the iconic Go-Betweens and their beloved new wave Aussie indie-rock. The video keeps in step with these vibes.

The newly married couple in the original footage projected onto the band are the parents of Electorate bass player, Eliot Fish. “This is literally a home reel of film from the 1960s, shot by my parents themselves while on their honeymoon travelling Europe. They left us with some incredible memories and amazing photos and film of their lives. They were vivacious, creative, and quirky, as you can see in the footage. While the song is not about them, the images they captured were so magical and special that it seemed like a nice celebration of their relationship to use the footage, which depicts those little personal moments we share with those we love, and the power of forming a connection with a like-minded soul.”

Making up the trio is Nick Kennedy. They have been a staple of the Sydney music scene for a number of years, with ties to Big Heavy Stuff, Knievel, The Apartments, Imperial Broads, Atticus, and the Templebears. They released their debut album, You Don’t Have Time to Stay Lost, in 2020, and their forthcoming album, My Design, has been produced by Wayne Connolly, who has worked with the likes of Teskey Brothers, Babe  Rainbow, Underground Lovers and You Am I.

By Design from The Electorate will be out on the 30th May, 2025. You can pre-order it HERE.
