What To Watch: Amazon Prime Video’s unmissable new additions this August

Let the social distancing binge viewing continue!

Winter may be over, but staying on the couch seems like the most reasonable seasonal activity as Amazon Prime Video promises to overload its devoted audience with one helluva line-up.

Harley and Katniss and Neo, oh my!

Kicking off the month with a bang is everyone’s favourite anti-heroine Harley Quinn in all her glorious animated form. As the Jester of Genocide’s ex-girlfriend seeks a life free from “Mr J”, the adult-skewered series (featuring Big Bang alum Kaley Cuoco voicing the character) takes a darkly comedic approach to her new found freedom alongside partner-in-crime Poison Ivy; think Deadpool meets Charlie’s Angels but animated.

On the subject of kick-ass females, Jennifer Lawrence takes prime position as Katniss Everdeen in the acclaimed Hunger Games series.  All four of the dystopian drama films – The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay parts 1 & 2 – will drop at the beginning of the month, giving you plenty of time to complete the epic quadrilogy.

Speaking of epic film series, The Matrix collection will also commence streaming on the 1st.  Starring Keanu Reeves as computer hacker Neo who uncovers a simulated reality where humans are unknowingly being harvested as an energy source, the 1999 science-fiction action film is often cited as one of the greatest  genre films of all time.  With nostalgia for Reeves at a peak thanks to the upcoming Bill & Ted Face the Music, now seems like as good a time as any to revisit him at his finest.

The Amazing Race – Bear Grylls style!

Premiering exclusively to Amazon Prime Video from August 14th, iconic adventurer Bear Grylls will host World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji.  Featuring 66 teams from across 30 countries racing over 670 kilometres of rugged Fijian terrain for 11 days, 24 hours a day, this just won’t be a challenge to win, it’ll be a challenge to survive!

The perseverance and sheer human determination will ultimately be what the show celebrates, with Amazon audiences getting up close and personal with the physical and mental endurance needed in order to survive the most unbelievable obstacles.

Dwayne, Daniel & Downey Jr.

If you’ve ever wanted to spend the evening with Dwayne Johnson, Daniel Craig, and Robert Downey Jr, Amazon has you covered.  The leading men will arrive at the tail end of the month, first on the 25th with Johnson returning to head into the jungle in Jumanji: The Next Level.

Likely to be one the biggest draws for the month, the 26th welcomes Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc in the star-studded murder mystery Knives Out.  Also featuring such talent as Chris Evans (and THAT sweater), Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ana de Armas, Rian Johnson‘s off-the-wall comedic thriller is perfect in-house entertainment for those that love their murder most foul and their comedy pitch black.

Closing out the line-up on the 29th are the animals of Robert Downey Jr’s family adventure Dolittle – as well as a little film you may have heard of called Cats.  There’s fun for audiences young and old to be had with both, though we suspect the inexplicable nature of seeing Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo as questionably attired felines in the latter may pique their curiosity.
