Blacktown Mayor Backs Western Sydney as Ideal Home for New Film Studio

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to begin the search for a second major film studio in Greater Sydney, saying Western Sydney is perfectly positioned to help drive the next phase of Australia’s screen industry growth.

The NSW Government has committed up to $100 million towards the development of a new large-scale studio, with the remaining investment expected to come from private sector partners.

Mayor Bunting said the strengths of Western Sydney – from its rapid population growth to its vibrant cultural diversity – make it a natural fit for a major new screen production hub.

“Western Sydney is bursting with creativity,” Mayor Bunting said. “Our young and diverse communities represent an incredible pipeline of talent for Australia’s screen industry, and the appetite for creative careers is only growing.”

He noted that the practical needs of large-scale productions also align well with what Western Sydney can offer.

“Major productions need room to grow – sound stages, workshops, backlots and the supporting infrastructure that comes with them,” he said. “Western Sydney has that space, and it has the communities ready to support an industry like this.”

Situated in one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, Blacktown City Council says it is ready to work alongside the NSW Government and industry partners to help bring a project of this scale to life.

Mayor Bunting added that the benefits of a new film studio would extend well beyond the screen industry itself.

“A development like this has the potential to strengthen the economy of Western Sydney while opening doors for the next generation,” he said. “For young people across our region who dream of working in film, television or the broader creative industries, opportunities like this can make those ambitions feel closer to home.”

Blacktown City Council continues to support the growth of creative industries through planning, infrastructure and partnerships designed to attract investment and create new opportunities for local talent.
