Werner Film Productions’ enacts a “Call for Concepts” for The Story Lab

Werner Film Productions (WFP) today announced a call for writers to submit original new television concepts for its development initiative, The Story Lab. Funded by Screen Australia’s Enterprise Stories, The Story Lab is an initiative of WFP’s two-time Emmy Nominated, AFI and multi-Logie award winning television producer Joanna Werner.

WFP aims to take risks through The Story Lab and to cultivate innovative Australian stories with global audience appeal. The successful concepts will be challenged, debated and strengthened over a week of rigorous development in a workshop environment. The Story Lab experience will be both exhausting and exhilarating for successful applicants, as each selected concept will be nurtured and enhanced through a high level and thorough “boot camp” of creativity. WFP are looking to develop Australian-made content that can hold its place amongst some of the truly brilliant and clever programming currently being viewed by audiences globally.

The Story Lab workshops will provide a solid creative foundation for the selected writer to develop market-ready materials, including a pitch bible and first draft pilot episode script. Concepts are invited for narrative television series treatments aimed at an adult audience in any genre.

Werner Film Productions is a boutique production company currently in development on a number of projects for children, teen and adult audiences, and is finishing up production on Ready For This, a joint venture with Blackfella Films for ABC3. Company founder Joanna Werner will also commence production on a 6-part political thriller, in July which is being produced in association with Matchbox Pictures.

Joanna is the Executive Producer, Producer and Co-Creator of acclaimed teen drama Dance Academy, which first screened in June 2010 in Australia and has gone on to be a global success. In 2011 and 2014 the series was recognised with nominations at the International Emmy Awards.

WFP was named the 2012 Australian Children’s Television Producer of the Year at the SPAA Independent Producer Awards and in 2013 was nominated for Children’s Producer of the Year as well as Australian Production Business of the Year.

“With 65 episodes of Dance Academy being viewed by a global audience in over 160 countries, and with other projects in various stages of development and production, we are excited to give writers the opportunity to realise their vision through The Story Lab. It’s a truly great opportunity to think big, to be ambitious and to be really creative – to find and develop stories with that unique perspective and edge,” Joanna said.

The Story Lab is open for submissions from Australian writers for projects in any narrative genre aimed at an adult audience by 5pm Friday 10 July 2015.
