Watch the first official trailer for Stephen Gaghan and Matthew McConaughey’s Gold

Matthew McConaughey has transformed again in the first official trailer for Gold. After shedding almost 21kg’s for Dallas Buyers Club McConaughey returns to screens as an older, rounder version of himself (a little bit Christian Bale in American Hustle) to take on the role of Kenny Wells, a down on his luck prospector.

When Wells teams-up with geologist Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez) the hapless pair find a massive deposit of gold deep in the uncharted jungles of Indonesia. It’s when Wells finds the gold things take a turn. Gold is based on a true story.

The script for Gold was first proposed for the big screen in 2011 and had previously attached Michael Mann and then Spike Lee to direct. In 2015 Stephen Gaghan took over the role of director and with him came additional cast members Bryce Dallas Howard, Timothy Simons, Toby Kebbell, Corey Stoll, Bruce Greenwood, Stacey Keach, and Macon Blair.

Gold will be released in the US on December 25th making it a prime pick for any potential Academy Awards. And as long as Gold isn’t anything like 2008 McConaughey’s Fool’s Gold, it’s in with a chance.

Gold hits Australian cinemas in 2017.
