It’s Colman versus Cumberbatch in biting first trailer for The Roses

The War of the Roses, a 1989 satirical black comedy from Danny DeVito which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a warring married couple and the bitter, fatal divorce that followed, never seemed like the most obvious choice to garner a remake.  But here we are, over three decades later, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman subbing in to cause some new century damage as The Roses.

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) : successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, igniting a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment.

Such fun!

Directed by Jay Roach (the Austin Powers trilogy, Meet the Parents), written by our own Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things), and featuring an all-star supporting cast, including Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney and Ncuti Gatwa, the comedy carnage is set for an August 28th release this year in Australia.
