This Week’s DVD Release Picks: Reality Bites (27th November 2015)

This week sees several reality television shows – and shows with as much drama as a reality series – released just in time for Christmas.

I AM CAIT, SEASON 1

We all knew when Caitlin Jenner revealed herself to the world in June that it would only be a matter of time before a reality television show was in the works. Enter I Am Cait, a series that chronicle’s Caitlin coming out as transgender, not only to her family, but to the world. Jenner’s daughters, step-family, and ex-wife all appear, and we see her adjust to her new life. I Am Cait has been praised for raising awareness of the issues faced by the transgender community.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF MELBOURNE, SEASON 2

Australia’s first Real Housewives installment returns for a second season (and has been renewed for a third). The ladies – including controversial lawyer Gina Liano – are back, including new recruits Pettifleur Berenger and Gamble Breaux. Say what you will about the Real Housewives franchise, but these shows have staying power, and this one is somewhat of a guilty pleasure. Perfect for a holiday watch, Real Housewives of Melbourne is certainly not short on drama.

DOWNTON ABBEY, SEASON 6

Whilst not technically a reality show, with the amount of soapy drama in it, Downton Abbey may as well be! Returning for its sixth and final season, Downton sees Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) struggle with his health, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) learning how to run the estate and deal with a new suitor, and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) try to keep Marigold’s parentage a secret from her sister. Whilst the show’s peak was in its earlier seasons, Downton Abbey has been an enjoyable series that has given a glimpse into the past – and an entertaining one at that.
