The Week’s DVD Release Picks: A week of Empires! (11th September 2015)

Empires of all kinds find themselves crumbling, evolving, and switching it up in this week’s DVD releases.

Ex Machina
Ex Machina is the first feature film by screenwriter Alex Garland, and what a stunning debut it is. Starring Alicia Vikander, Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, Ex Machina explores the philosophical and moral questions surrounding the invention of the AI. Garland has created an edge-of-your-seat thriller and shows great promise as a director, while the cast are phenomenal. Ex Machina is one of the best films of 2015, and definitely worth a watch.

Parenthood Season 6
The sixth and final season of this American drama aired to great ratings and critical acclaim. The Braverman family find themselves grappling with some devastating news, and all three generations find their lives changing immensely. One for the fans, Parenthood is a great drama that didn’t get nearly enough recognition in Australia as it should have.

Empire Season 1
US network FOX struck gold with Empire, a hip-hop drama with a great cast and an even greater soundtrack to match. Terrence Howard stars as Lucious Lyon, a hip-hop mogul who must choose his successor after he is diagnosed with ALS. Taraji P. Henson is a knock-out as his intelligent and cunning ex-wife, Cookie.
