With the return of the Oscars, Sydney Opera House’s fourth All About Women festival returns on Sunday 6th March, and has created three fictional trailers for films “you probably won’t be seeing this summer” – films that would pass the ‘Bechdel test’.
The Bechdel test, a benchmark developed by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, judges how much Hollywood values female characters by applying a simple criteria: does the film feature at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man?
The fictional trailers feature a fictional rom-com, thriller, and horror film – starring Australian actors Celeste Barber (How to Behave, All Saints) and Adele Vuko (Activewear, Skitbox), and features women in a strong role, with a man in a supporting role. Written and directed by Florence Noble, the fictional series was produced by Michelle Hardy.
The All About Women festival is one of Sydney Opera House’s flagship festivals dedicated to discussions about ideas that matter to women, providing an important platform for women’s voices. The festival features over 30 guests from around the world including Canada, France, Mexico, South Africa and the United States.
