Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel and David Wenham attend the Australian premiere of Lion

The star-studded cast of the acclaimed new film Lion hit the red carpet in Sydney earlier this week, a month out from its cinematic release here in Australia.

Aussies Nicole Kidman and David Wenham were joined at the State Theatre in Sydney by follow actor at star Dev Patel, the film’s director Garth Davis as well as crew members and the real life Brierley family, on whom the film – which is a favourite of this year’s awards season – is based.

The film, which is a co-production between the US, UK and Australia, is based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, played by Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), and is an adaptation of his book A Long Way Home. Under the direction of Aussie Garth Davis, who is making his feature film debut in the Director’s chair, Nicole Kidman and David Wenham play Patel’s adopted Australian parents, John and Sue Brierley.

The film – as in the book – document’s Saroo’s struggle for survival after getting lost on a train in India at just five years of age, before being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty Five years later, he embarks on a journey to try and find his family.

Australian writer Luke Davies (Candy) penned the screenplay, and the film also stars Rooney Mara, Priyanka Bose, Deepti Naval and Sunny Pawar. Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Angie Fielder produced the film.

Lion will be released in cinemas across Australia on 19th January 2017.
