Netflix’s Obama biopic Barry to see an Aussie newcomer in the lead role

President Obama’s time in the White House is almost at an end, so in honour of the 44th president, Netflix are debuting a new film entitled Barry, focusing on the man himself.

Appearing at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival to critical-acclaim, Barry is a nuanced, artistic exploration of a pivotal year in the life of a young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry”.  Arriving in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University, Barry’s experiences over that pivotal school year lay the foundation for his views on race, government, and what it means to be an American.

Director Vikram Gandhi (Kumaré, HBO’s Vice), approached author Adam Mansbach to help tell this origin story, and from that collaboration Mansbach penned the script.

The film stars Australian newcomer Devon Terrell in a breakout performance as Barry, and features a strong supporting cast including Ashley Judd and Jenna Elfman.

Barry will arrive on Netflix on December 16.
