As we inch slowly, painfully, closer to the release of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, some armchair detective work by the team at comicbook.com has revealed what may be the first tentative link between the new film and Netflix’s growing collection of Marvel shows.
Earlier this week, Disney circulated an email listing the cast members attending next week’s world premiere; among them was Alfre Woodard. Woodard was due to make her first appearance in the Marvel Universe in the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage.
In Luke Cage, Woodard will play Mariah Dillard a New York politician caught between Cage and his old enemy “Cottonmouth” Stoke.
The list also included another late and unexpected addition to the cast credits: comedian Jim Rash. Rash is best known for his work as the Dean in NBC’s Community.
While shows like Jessica Jones and Daredevil have contained off-handed nods to the Avengers flicks (and to each other), if Woodard does play Dillard in Civil War her appearance would mark the first Marvel film reference to the Netflix shows.
However, this was all great fun and games until Screen Rant came along to confirm that the whole thing came down to an unlikely coincidence.
They revealed that Woodard will appear in a “small yet pivotal role” as the grieving mother of an American killed during the battle at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Marvel’s Luke Cage will premiere on Netflix on September 30th.
