The legend of Friday the 13th begins with Crystal Lake in chilling teaser trailer

More than four decades after Friday the 13th introduced one of horror’s most enduring legends, the franchise is heading back to its roots. The first teaser for Crystal Lake has arrived, offering an unsettling glimpse at the upcoming psychological thriller series that explores the tragic events before Jason Voorhees became a horror icon.

Premiering October 16th on Stan, Crystal Lake shifts the focus away from the masked killer audiences know so well and instead centres on his mother, Pam Voorhees, whose devastating loss would ultimately change the sleepy lakeside town forever.

Emmy nominee Linda Cardellini stars as Pam, a single mother still haunted by the drowning of her young son, Jason. But this isn’t simply a retelling of familiar franchise lore. The series promises a mystery of its own, as two strangers arrive in Crystal Lake searching for answers about Pam’s past, triggering a series of disturbing events that force the town to question who she really is – and what dark secrets have been buried for so long.

The teaser wisely keeps its biggest surprises hidden, instead favouring an atmosphere of creeping dread over outright shocks. Long shadows, uneasy silences and haunting imagery suggest Crystal Lake is taking a more psychological approach than the blood-soaked slashers that made the franchise famous, while still embracing the mythology that has captivated horror fans for generations.

Created by showrunner, writer and executive producer Brad Caleb Kane, the series reunites the franchise with original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller, with A24 and Horror, Inc. helping bring this new chapter of the Jason Universe to life.

Alongside Cardellini, the ensemble cast includes William Catlett as Crystal Lake police chief Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as his journalist sister Brianna, Cameron Scoggins as Officer Dorf, Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, one of Jason’s fellow campers, and Callum Vinson portraying a young Jason Voorhees.

Whether you’re a lifelong Friday the 13th fan or someone discovering the story for the first time, Crystal Lake looks poised to expand one of horror’s most iconic myths by asking audiences to reconsider the tragedy – and the woman – that started it all.
