Australian Box Office Report: Everest sticks around at the peak

Despite a couple of debuts and perfectly timed family films, Everest has stemmed the tide and held onto top spot. The adventure flick made $2.2 million in its second week in Australia and $13 million in The US. It sits on a comfortable worldwide gross of $98 million – an achievement due to its relatively limited release.

I suppose I was wrong last week when I mentioned Pixels’ imminent downfall – the retro gaming inspired family film earned more than its previous week with $2.1 million putting it at a close number 2. It actually had a 10% increase in The States over its former weekend so maybe I should lay off the predictions for a while.

Last weeks openers did quite well for themselves too. Pan – Disney’s retelling of its classic tale – debuted at number 3  with $2 million. It’s yet to open in America but its promising start in Australia bodes well.

M. Night Shyamalan’s newest The Visit is doing great on its $5 million budget. It opened here with $1.1 million while a couple of weeks ago it had a wonderful $25 million opening in America. The master of suspense may be back to his masterful film making yet.

And although our homegrown Blinky Bill isn’t getting  a lot of attention (however it still hangs on at number 9), Oddball plants it feet in fourth position with $1.7 million. That brings its total down under to $4.5 million.
