Australian Box Office Report: Clowns and Emojis make strange bedfellows at the top

It turns out that Aussies like having the crap scared out of them, as for the second week in a row, It sits at no. 1 at the box office, this week taking in $4.99m.  It has made $14.71m since it’s opening week, the best double weekend earnings since Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Having said that, it looks like people are also into a bit of light and brevity with their silver screen experience, with The Emoji Movie sitting at no. 2 in its opening weekend.  It made $2.04m and managed a screen average of $6,221, in spite of reviews calling it amongst the worst ever made.

It’s been a strong weekend for new releases with the rest of the top five going to box office debuts. Victoria And Abdul, starring Dame Judi Dench, opened at no. 3, bringing in $1.88m.  Last week’s no. 3, the road trip comedy Girls Trip, has dropped to no. 7 this week.

Action/thriller American Assassin, starring Michael Keaton and Sanaa Lathan, debuted at no. 4, earning $1.22m. This is not to be confused with last week’s 4th place film, American Made (that one had Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleeson in it), which this week dropped to 9th place.

The mysterious Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence film, Mother!, opened in 5th and made $697k in the process.  It earned the least, screen average-wise, of this week’s top 5 films, making just $2,681 (In comparison, American Assassin generated a $5,273 screen average).  Last week’s no. 5 was the epic Dunkirk, which now sits at no. 12 – though it’ll stick around for a few more weeks in select cinemas, including the IMAX in Melbourne, so don’t miss your chance to see the exclusive 1570 print there.

Next week should see mention of both The LEGO Ninjago Movie or Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and don’t expect that bloody clown to go anywhere, floating in the top three somewhere, not heading down the sewers just yet …
