What to do for Cinco de Mayo in Sydney for 2016

Tomorrow, May 5th, will bring Cinco de Mayo around once again, celebrating Mexican culture around the world, and you can be sure some of Sydney’s best are getting involved with various specials, events, and more. We’ve put together a guide for the best happenings in Sydney tomorrow so get across these and you’ll soon be finding yourself full of tacos, burritos, Tequila, Mezcal, and just general festive joy.

Barrio Cellar (CBD)

Take a pair of your finest dancing shoes down to Barrio Cellar off Martin Place because this city-fav is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with local DJs and a taco & tequila party. El Jimador have teamed up with the crew to offer some combos which will see $5 Mexican Cerveza all night, $5 sangria, and a “buy four get one free” deal for both the lush El Jimador reposado and Barrio Cellar’s excellent, sizable tacos. 4pm till late!

El Loco (CBD; Surry Hills)

Both El Loco Slip Inn and El Loco Excelsior are expected to do something every Cinco de Mayo and why wouldn’t they be? For lovers of good Mexican food and drink, El Loco is a staple. Kicking off tomorrow (Thurs) and lasting until Mother’s Day (Sunday 8th May), both venues will be throwing a four-day bender of everything Mexican including pinatas, special Mexican burgers with matching margaritas, and more soundtracked by local DJs.

SoCal (Neutral Bay)

Essential Neutral Bay haunt SoCal will be turning up the heat for Cinco De Mayo on Thursday 5th May as they celebrate all things Mexican with Tequila and tacos aplenty. On the festive day the popular small bar will be bringing back their now legendary Taco Roulette, which features a plate of four tacos for $16, where one is so damn super duper hot the (un)lucky winner/loser of the game will probably need to douse themselves in copious amounts of Tequila, and a few Coronas to boot.

In addition, SoCal will be offering buckets of Coronas (4 bottles) for $25 and Tommy’s Margaritas for $10 each, with more food coming in the form of $4 Baja Fish and Steak Tacos, and $12 quesadillas filled with either Sriracha Chicken or Pork Al Pastor.

Address: 1 Young St Neutral Bay

Kirribilli Hotel (Milsons Point)

Playa Takeria (Darlinghurst)

While Playa Takeria (as far as we can see) haven’t announced anything exclusively for Cinco de Mayo this year they’ll be continuing their weekly Thursday special tomorrow that has all of their excellent entradas available for $10.

Address: 132 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst

El Topo (Bondi Junction)

Bondi Junction’s long-standing Mexican go-to will be throwing a chilli eating competition from 7:30pm with $250 vouchers up for grabs. Of course, just walking in doesn’t man that you’ll be tied to a chair and forced to participate, so for those that aren’t keen on downing candle wax beforehand to try and cheat your way to glory [disclaimer: I don’t know if that actually works I just think of that Simpsons episode every time a chilli competition is mentioned] El Topo will be offering up all their best eats along with a Cinco de Mayo theme and a marching maricarchi band. Sign up on for the chilli eating competition via their website!

Address: 3/500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction

Mejico (CDD; Miranda)

Head along to either the Mejico in CBD or Miranda from 12pm on Thursday and you’ll be greeted with a lavish Cinco de Mayo celebration that includes $5 tacos, $10 margaritas, and more for lunch while there will be sombreros and maracas spread across the space should you want to get all festive in the right way. The restaurant’s bar has also whipped up a special cocktail for the day, dubbed the Cadillac Margaritas, with Herradura Plata, Grand Marnier, house-aged in a herradura sherry cask with lemon, lime, and ruby grapefruit.

Home (Your House)

If you’re more a stay at home Cinco De Mayo-er then newly launched Tequila, Sesión, fresh off winning Gold Medals at 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, have put together two cocktail recipes putting Mexican spins on renowned classics. Make these up, buy one of those weird taco kits from your local, throw on Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and your set.

Old Fashioned Mocha
A take on the classic “Old Fashioned,” this tequila masterpiece brings the Sesión Mocha and Reposado together in harmony. This is an amazing mix of the tequila flavours that really heroes the coffee and chocolate finish of the Mocha

Ingredients:
30ml Sesión Mocha
30ml Sesión Reposado
1tsp Brown sugar

Method:
Place the brown sugar in a tumbler and add a dash of water. Stir the brown sugar until most of it is diluted, almost making a paste. Add the other ingredients and ice and stir until chilled. Garnish with a large swathe of orange peel

Negroni Mocha
The Negroni Mocha combines the subtle oak hints of the Sesión Reposado with the beautiful chocolate finishes of the Sesión Mocha. With a little help from our other liquor friends, we have a new take on the traditional “Negroni”

Ingredients:
20ml Sesión Reposado
20ml Campari
10ml Sweet Vermouth
10ml Sesión Mocha

Method:
Add all the ingredients to a tumbler filled with ice and stir until chilled. Garnish with a large swathe of orange peel
