Review: nine-times distilled, Small Mouth Vodka makes good use of organic Australian ingredients

Two years ago, founders Chris Payton and Rohan Rivett attracted a lot of attention to their Small Mouth Vodka. The 100% Australian made organic Vodka picked up both a Gold Medal and a Master Medal, the top accolade, in the “Smooth” category at the 2015 Vodka Masters in London, putting this artisan Vodka on the map and perking interest from those around the world who consider themselves aficionados of fine spirits.

Distilled and bottled in regional NSW (Pokolbin to be exact), Small Mouth presents drinkers with a very fine alternative to imported Vodka, promising the type of cleanliness and smooth texture rarely often associated the more established premium brands like Grey Goose and Belvedere. It’s described as having no preservatives, artificial additives, colours or flavours, a focus on quality no doubt credited to the focus on producing only limited qualities at any one time, through time-tested and traditional techniques as well as a few “modern ideas”. It’s produced in copper pot stills and is distilled a total of 9 times and charcoal filtered 3 times, which should already tell you a lot about the strength of character and full-flavoured palate it promises.

It’s safe to say that promise is delivered upon too. Small Mouth is exceptionally smooth and its palate seems to have been very tightly controlled, beginning with an earthy nose full of airy citrus and a very slight hint of fruit. It’s well connected with the palate, which starts soft and creamy before those promises of sweet fruit, perhaps blueberries, start to subtly come through.

“We disagree with comments suggesting that Vodka should be a colourless, odourless, tasteless spirit”, offered Payton in a recent press release. “Whilst subtle, we think a good Vodka should have character and achieve a balance between this and purity”.

Evidently, this isn’t just empty marketing speak. The team have successfully offered a Vodka to the Australian market that’s edging towards the higher-end and bringing a healthy (in more ways than one) alternative to those who may not like as much burn with their Vodka as they are used to.

You can grab a bottle of Small Mouth Vodka in Australia through Dan Murphy’s ($59.89 per 500ml bottle) and select independent bottle shops. It’s also stocked in various bars around the country that focus on locally made and/or premium spirits. More information can be found at their official website HERE.
