Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed first guest chef announced for The Unicorn’s new lunch series (Sydney)

One of Sydney’s finest pubs, The Unicorn Hotel, is about to launch a new ongoing lunch series with guest chefs from across Australia, all tasked with cooking up their interpretation of what Australian cuisine actually is.

Duncan Welgemoed has been announced as the first guest of the series, heading to The Unicorn’s kitchen on Sunday 24th September armed with mountains of acclaim, built up over the years at his famous Adelaide restaurant Africola. He’ll be cooking alongside The Unicorn’s head chef James Garside, presenting guests with a three-course lunch menu which so far is said to feature the likes of roasted sardines with zhoug, peri peri chicken with “boom chakalaka sauce”, and a smoked chocolate & salted butter caramel torte.

“[Duncan is] is one of the best chefs in the country”, said The Unicorn’s co-owner Kenny Graham. “He’s a friend who we’ve worked with in the past and had a fucking ball doing so. He’s also South African so thought it would be a great first step in the series to see his take on Aussie food”.

Graham’s business partner and one of Sydney’s distinguished burger kings, Jake Smyth will be selected a bunch of natural wines for those who want to shell out a bit more for an add-on pairing to the lunch. Though those who just want the food are looking at $50pp for the three-courser. There will be 55 seats put aside for this lunch, which will kick off at 1pm on the day.
