A closer look inside Art Series Hotel Group’s Queensland debut: The Johnson

Earlier this year, one of the most highly regarded boutique hotel brands in the country, Art Series Hotel Groups, finally opened the doors to their long-awaited Queensland debut, The Johnson, followed an extensive three-year renovation of the heritage listed Main Roads Building. Like its sister hotels, the property pushes light-hearted luxury with a link to selected Australian art, which in this case is celebrated abstract artist Michael Johnson.

Johnson’s work with nature and its many textures have been vividly reflected in the hotel’s design, a careful craft of light-filled rooms, the use of natural materials and larger communal spaces filled with some of the artist’s original works, like “Oyster Line” (2012/2013) which highlights Johnson’s fascination and close observation of the sea with hues of deep blue and pops of colour.

Within the hotel, past the grand courtyard filled with greenery and flowing ponds, 97 suites and 3 lush penthouses comprise the luxury accommodation. Amenities include a 50m rooftop pool with north-facing views designed by the legendary Michael Klim, a spacious sundeck with cabana booths and a BBQ area, and a gymnasium. Conference and event facilities feature for business travelers and functions, while food and bev is taken care of by adjoining 160-seated restaurant Tumbling Stone and smaller, takeaway friendly café Stepping Stone.

Rooms themselves carry the property’s recurring palette, which nods to Johnson with deep blues, greys and bursts of bold colours. Gold light fixtures also feature in rooms, illuminating the open-planned designs which are accented with refined Danish mid-century furnishings, bathrooms with double-basins, state of the art 42″ LCD televisions, in-room kitchenettes and comfortable balconies. Mini bars each feature a small canvas to encourage guests to get creative.

Consistent with the hotel group and its sister hotels, The Johnson also has staff which have been trained by local art curator’s to offer tours of the hotel which offer insight into the property as well as Brisbane culture. Guests can further this with their own teachings through The Johnson’s in-room art channels and art libraries.
