Following up the huge success of his debut mixtape Just Kids, Wollongong-based artist Stevan wastes no time with new single “Impress You”.
Gliding over a fast-bubbling beat shaped by LUCIANBLOMKAMP, it’s clear the 19-year-old artist has no designs to slow down anytime soon, demonstrating a sound that’s even more expansive and open than the potent alt-R&B styles that made Just Kids such an instant hit.
The darker synth work of “Impress You” is another layer to this fascinating artist, who seemingly popped up out of nowhere with tracks like “Timee” and “Tripping” earlier this year and easily sketched comparisons to the likes of Blood Orange and Steve Lacey. It’s defined by a slick, sun-soaked sound and an honest examination of the pressures of pleasing others while journeying to find your own true self, deepening the multi-instrumentalist’s range.
“‘Impress You’ was one of the first tracks that I made with LUCIANBLOMKAMP,” explained Stevan. “I speak on my experienced with overcoming social pressure and finding myself. It’s probably my most personal song to date.”
To complement the cinematic song, Stevan worked with creative director Michael Dole (Flume, The Avalanches) and has turned in a striking contrast of intimacy and isolated landscapes. You can check it out below.
