Track of the Day: Something For Kate “Waste Our Breath” (2020)

Though Melbourne’s Palais Theatre may be begging for some life right now, a new music video from Aussie music royalty Something For Kate fills out the empty venue as the three-piece perform on stage to no one.

A rush of energy courses through “Waste Our Breath”, the second single lifted from SFK’s first album in almost a decade. Though the album is yet to find a release date, this combined with earlier-in-the-year single “Situation Room” is more than enough to make up for years of absence, springing us back into that flawless mix of Paul Dempsey’s husky vocals flying high over an exceptionally built instrumental.

Dempsey’s vocals yearn for an empty space away from social media and a surveillance society, retreating straight to a completely empty Palais Theatre where the band finds solace on stage.

“The eerie silence of the theatre perfectly reflected the song’s themes of futility – about throwing all your energy at something knowing that it will get you nowhere – so what better way to sum that up by performing to 3000 empty seats,” descried the band.

Stay tuned for Something For Kate’s new album coming later this year.
