Track of the Day: Jess Day “Signals” (2020)

Jess Day from Adelaide has a new track out tomorrow, “Signals”, on the back of a run of singles which has well and truly established her as a potent talent. Her debut single “Why is She So Beautiful?” landed her as a triple J Unearthed feature artist,  with the followup releases”Rabbit Hole” and “Affection” both receiving significant airplay. I have a feeling this latest offering will take her to the next level.

In “Signals”, Jess has allowed the lyrics to come to the fore, with her vocals shining, and some pretty epic hand-clapping. This song gets you on the first listen, and it’s going to be a total killer when played live.

Of this track, Jess said, “I tried to articulate the conflicting emotions of resenting yet missing someone who mistreated you. I think a lot of people prefer to demonise the toxic people they cut out of their lives, for valid reasons, but also as a way of masking the fact that they may still miss parts of them.”

Jess had some powerhouse help on “Signals”, with Peter Katis (Kurt Vile, The National, Death Cab for Cutie, Middle Kids) working with her on production.

Jess has had some great support slots recently, including supporting Boy & Bear on their national tour, as well as performing at Laneway Festival and Handpicked Festival.  Jess also made the Triple J Unearthed Ones to Watch in 2020 list.No doubt when the lockdown clears, Jess will be on the road again and at a venue nearby. Do catch her live when you can and see why she is generating such a buzz.

The track is out Friday – you can pre-save it HERE

Give it a listen, and you can read the lyrics to “Signals” below.

JESS DAY ‘SIGNALS’ LYRICS

Never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
Everybody tells me time heals all wounds
But my bones are
Aching from the fall I took for you
When you dropped me you said
I can make you lose your mind
We did it half a thousand times

‘Cause you’ve got my signals crossing
You’ve got my signals crossed
I’m never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
You’ve got my
You’ve got my signals

I wish that I’d never taken you out
To that party had your ass on the couch
Didn’t talk to any of my friends
Just sat in silence with your edgy long hair

Never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
Everybody tells me time heals all wounds
But my bones are
Aching from the fall I took for you
When you dropped me you said
I can make you lose your mind
We did it half a thousand times

‘Cause you’ve got my signals crossing
You’ve got my signals crossed
I’m never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
You’ve got my
You’ve got my signals

And I know you’ll say you tried to
But I’ll go back to the eyes who saw it all
And they’ll tell you
I never was half as bad as I was with you

Never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
Everybody tells me time heals all wounds
But they’re so wrong and I’m
Aching from the fall I took for you
When you dropped me you said
I can make you lose your mind
We did it half a thousand times

‘Cause you’ve got my signals crossing
You’ve got my signals crossed
I’m never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
You’ve got my signals crossing

Never gonna get you off my mind
I tried for so long
Everybody tells me time heals all wounds
But they’re so wrong and I’m
Aching from the fall I took for you
When you dropped me you said
You’ve got my signals
You, you’ve got my signals

“Signals” will be released tomorrow (3rd April, 2020) through Ditto Music on all digital platforms. You can keep up to date with Jess on her Facebook and Instagram pages.
