Track of the Day: Clipping Feat. Shabazz Palaces “Aquacode Databreaks” (2019)

Art rap has a new anthem as we move into 2020, but you already knew that by reading the headline. L.A’s Clipping have tapped Shabazz Palaces for a track that sounds exactly like what you’d expect (and want) from this reliable collaboration, violently clashing their respective styles to bring about a caustic rap anthem about…living underwater.

“Aquacode Databreaks” is a weird robotic jam, discordant and harsh with lyrics like “I pull up on my seahorse, blinged out with diamonds / bumping ghetto whale songs, head from miles out”. Of course Sub Pop Records ate it up, and so will fans of both groups.

The song has been lifted from the forthcoming 12″ of “The Deep”, another Clipping song which has been around for over two years but is only now seeing official release for the NPR show This American Life.
