Theatrical UK music festival Boomtown just dropped an incredible 2020 line up

So, who’s coming to the UK with us in August?

Boomtown, an annual multi-day music festival held at the Matterley Estate in Hampshire has got us feeling all kinds of envy (and hope – we want to go to there) with their 2020 line-up, which was just announced and has subsequently been plastered all over music media.

It’s definitely one of the most diverse line-ups, that doesn’t focus on legacy rock or mainstream pop acts, in recent memory. It might even rival the blockbuster Primavera 2020 program in terms of music cred.

Underworld are headlining, but so are Wu-Tang Clan, and Squarepusher, and Kool & The Gang, and The Libertines. Then you’ve got acts like Andy C, Flogging Molly, Moodymann, The Black Madonna, iconic rap supergroup Sugarhill Gang & Furious 5, Dilated Peoples, Tank & The Bangas, Kelis, Orbital, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Mad Professor, Venetian Snares and more. That’s a whole lot of genre, split on a whole lot of conceptual stages.

And conceptual really is what Boomtown is known for. It’s widely considered one of the most creative music festivals around, with multiple districts, streets and performing citizens twisted into one giant storyline. As the promoters say themselves: Boomtown is a fictitious city set within an alternative world. They also promise a “labyrinth of adventures waiting to be discovered”.

It’s one of the European festivals that’s not as known outside of Europe as Glasto, Primavera Sound and Flow Festival. That could have something to do with it’s relatively niche programming, but it also seems like one of the festivals anyone who attends would rather keep a secret.
