Single of the Day: Ali Barter “Girlie Bits” (2016)

Ali Barter, drop your album already please. Since “Far Away” dropped earlier this year, the Melbourne songwriter has had us well excited for new material and with multiple opportunities now on the cards to see her perform around the country…all we need is a full record of material to cap it off.

BUT. In the meantime, Barter has released an awesome new single in “Girlie Bits”, a tune that fuses pop with punk, throwing the spotlight on perceptions of femininity. Says Barter of the new tune (earning a triple j premiere this week):

Girlie Bits has nothing to do with body parts, it’s about the cage of what we expect of women: girlie guitar parts, girlie singing, hair; this idea of ‘femininity’ and how to fit within it. But women are not some gentle, watered down version of men. We do it our own way. We work really hard to write good songs and play great gigs – only to have people critique our clothes and the look on our faces, instead of the music.”

Fuck yes.

Take a listen of “Girlie Bits” below and be sure to see Barter on the road with both City Calm Down and The Jezabels in coming months!
