New Music Discoveries 27th June: Folk Bitch Trio, The Beths, Worm Girlz, and more

As we bring June to a close and move into the second half of the year we bring you ten more new tracks, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier this week. Naarm’s ever compelling Folk Bitch Trio take our Track of the Week spot with “Moth Song”, the latest to be released from their forthcoming debut album Now Would Be A Good Time – out July 25th on Jagjaguwar.

It’s another exquisite release from the trio, firmly cementing their forthcoming album’s place on our most anticipated list for the rest of the year. Sparse, affecting, and utterly beguiling “Moth Song” is all about unrequited love, and “being so spun out by everything that you feel like you’re delusional and hallucinating crazy things.” It’s just beautiful.

You can catch the trio on their Australian and New Zealand tour later in the year. International fans don’t have to wait quite so long, with the band playing some select headline shows in the US across July and August, this is on top of  their already announced run supporting Whitney on their upcoming US tour. For more information about all the dates head HERE.

“Take You Out” is the second single from Burleigh Heads five piece Brave Daisy. Bursting with charm, “Take You Out” is all about finding the courage to ask someone out IRL. There’s a reassuring familiarity to proceedings – a hook laden chorus, bold guitars, and a satisfying bounce – without feeling derivative. The spoken word interlude was a nice touch too.  They have a saxophone too, so frankly that’s us sold! Two tracks in it’s pretty clear there’s more to come from the band from Burleigh Heads.

Sticking with Queensland five pieces we also have “Get Ugly”, the empowering new single from Meanjin alt-rockers Worm Girlz. An infectious rejection of toxic beauty standards, “Get Ugly” delivers its message with wit, swagger, and a healthy dose of unflinching lyricism. “Get Ugly” is a song that encourages audience participation, it’s designed to be shouted in unison, and it as close as you’re going to get to a Worm Girlz live set on record. To experience the real thing you’ll have to head down to Black Bear Lodge for UGH on July 11th.

We have a habit of cherry picking the best of the Kiwi talent and claiming them as our own, and it won’t be too long before Australians will be claiming The Beths as one of ours. We’ve been major fans since their first album, and were excited to see a new single land in our inbox. “No Joy”, is the latest to drop, and is a very candid and honest account of the challenges faced by lead singer and songwriter, Elizabeth Stokes, whilst working on their upcoming fourth album – Straight Line Was a Lie – out 29th of August.. Whilst taking an SSRI for the depression she was suffering, Stokes sings of the impact it was having on her. She states:  “It wasn’t that I was sad, I was feeling pretty good. It was just that I didn’t like the things that I liked. I wasn’t getting joy from them. It’s very literal.” .The track has the trademark Beths killer one-liners, with a strident percussion beat running through its core. They are about to head off on a massive tour of North America, The UK and Europe. Head to their website for all the details.

AU favourite Daphnie makes his return this week with the aptly titled “This Song Has Claps In It”, and it’s an absolute vibe! Which is what we’ve come to expect from the Sydneysider to be honest. Fun, funky and flirtatious, “This Song Has Claps In It” takes Daphnie’s often maximalist tendencies into a distinctly disco direction – and of course it delivers and more.

We’re big fans of jangly indie-pop, and Royel Otis have it in spades in “car”, their latest earworm.  It’s little wonder that they are firm festival favourites. Their second album, hickey, will be released on the 22nd of August.  They are currently on tour – indeed they are playing at Glastonbury this weekend. They have more festivals lined up in the UK and Europe, before hitting North America.

Also added to the playlist this week is “River Calls” from composer and producer Message To Bears, and “Bystander” from San Diego dream pop outfit moondaddy. Finally, we’ve added two tracks which we premiered earlier in the week – “Heaven’s Gate” from Origami Ghosts and “Wasting Time” from Duxie Franklin
