New Music Discoveries 22nd November: The Delines, Jet City Sports Club, Tiny Habits, and more

It’s just shy of five weeks until Christmas (sorry!) and we’re not into holiday mode at AU Towers quite yet. This week we’ve added another ten tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Included amongst them are two tracks we exclusively premiered earlier in the week.

Portland-based country-soul group The Delines take home our Track of the Week with their brand new single “Left Hook Like Frazier”. The track is the first single to be released from the group’s freshly announced new album Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom, which is due February 14th on Love Police Records & Tapes.

A cautionary tale of love, heartbreak and the risks of seeking comfort in all the wrong places, “Left Hook Like Frazier” introduces listeners to one of the album’s overarching themes – drifter couples in love, romance, and whole heap of tragedy.

The songwriting here, and indeed the rest of the album, is unsurprisingly steeped in storytelling. After all the band’s songwriter is acclaimed author, songwriter and musician Willy Vlautin. Despite the inherent tragedy, the songs themselves are beautifully presented, with cinematic production replete with horns and string arrangements. You’ve also got Amy Boone’s soulful and emotive vocal to carry you through. February can’t come soon enough!

We fell in love with Boston-based trio Tiny Habits with their debut album All For Something that was released in May this year. They are back with a new single, “For Sale Sign” featuring the fabulous Lizzy McAlpine. It’s a poignant and moving examination of memories left when someone passes on. With beautiful sweet textured harmonies, it’s delicate and atmospheric. They are about to hit our shores, playing gigs in Brisbane (29th Nov), Sydney (1st Dec – Sold out) and Melbourne (3rd Dec). They will be very special shows indeed.

Jet City Sports Club are one of our favourite indie guitar bands out of Sydney. “Mini Skirt” is another calling card for why we rate them so highly. A song which presses the importance of being yourself and ignoring the lure of comparison to others – “…you don’t have to be perfect or conform to the ways your friends, family or the world might want you to. The story is narrated from the perspective of a young girl going through serious body image issues and pressure to be someone they might not necessarily be. The verses talk about this and the chorus aims to reclaim a sense of independence and self worth.”. They have a bunch of shows coming up, supporting Eliza and the Delusionals as well as slots at Party in the Paddock and Rolling Sets. Get along and see one of our most exciting young guitar bands.

Australian country artist Billie-Jo Porter has teamed up with Andrew Swift for her new single “This is Us Here”. Produced by Shane Nicholson, the single is more of a freewheeling rocker than perhaps a traditional country track. Inspired by a Canadian road trip undertaken by Porter and her partner, the track really leans into those ‘freedom of the open road’ vibes. In short, it’s road trip playlist ready. The vocals of Porter and Swift really work well together and complement each other, and there’s some really lovely guitar work on this one that brings that reassuring country twang to proceedings. Porter will be heading up and down the East Coast over the next couple of months playing shows, so make sure you keep an eye out.

Liverpool’s Courting have shared the lead single, “Pause At You” from their upcoming third album, Lust for Life, Or: ‘How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story’ which will be released on March 14 . It fizzes and crackles, a high-energy slice of infectious northern English guitar rock. We can’t wait to hear more of the album.

“Changes” is the opening track from Borders, Baby – the debut album from American singer-songwriter (and former session guitarist) Lucky Kilmartin. According to Kilmartin “Changes” is ‘a song of love, loss and freedom’. It’s also happens to be incredibly beautiful. If you have a penchant for a sad song, then this one should really hit the spot, thanks to a healthy dose of emotive guitar and an abundance of harmonies with Briston Maroney, Cece Coakley and Britt Ronstadt all on backing vocal duties. Borders, Baby is out now – go and check it out!

Also added this week is “Best Friends” from BANKS and the new single from Los Angeles-based fuzz-folk project Pisces (“Dance Away Blues”). Finally, we’ve also added two exclusive premieres from Dave Murphy (“Josephine”) and Howlite (“Everything Is Here”).
