New Music Discoveries 10th March: Róisín Murphy, Telenova, Christine and the Queens, and more

This week we’ve added a further ten new tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Our Track of the Week is “CooCool” from the ever cool and creative Irish singer, songwriter and producer Ròisín Murphy.

Produced by German electronic artist DJ Koze, “CooCool” heralds Murphy’s signing to record label Ninja Tune. It’s a beautifully soulful track, which harnesses the warmth of classic soul and disco to frame and show off Murphy’s now iconic vocals.

There’s a lovely deftness, lightness of touch and playfulness to it which is just so appealing. It manages to get that balance between the modern and the classic just right. And then DJ Koze’s production makes sure everything just pops. This is not the first time the duo have collaborated and it’s clear their pan-international way of working pays off. Hopefully, “CooCool” is just the first salvo of new music we can expect from Murphy this year, because it’s a real treat.

“on the street” is the latest track from South Korean sensation j-hope; coming just days after it was officially announced that he will soon begin the process to undertake his mandatory military service.

The release of this song with J. Cole is a full-circle moment for the BTS member; j-hope and his team members have consistently shared their admiration for the hip-hop King throughout their career. The K-Pop group officially released their 2013 reinterpretation of “Born Sinner”, featuring “Born Singer” on their 2022 anthology album Proof. “on the street” is a timeless testament to hip-hop; together, the duo have created something that recognises their roots of their roots while also promises a hopeful future.

“Woohoo” is the latest single from Auckland/Tāmaki-Makaurau-based two-piece Surf Friends. The track is the final single from their upcoming album Sonic Waves, which is out next week March 17th on Flying Nun Records. It can really be summed up by its title; it’s jangly surf rock at its finest — stripped back, hazy joyfulness. Our New Zealand readers can catch them playing some album release shows in Auckland and Raglan in the coming weeks. Tickets can be found HERE. Hopefully they’ll make the trip across the ditch soon too.

Saint Lane has dropped “3:33”, another catchy earworm from the genre hopper. He seemingly has an endless stream of ideas and influences, and “3:33” is an upbeat indie bop. It reflects on a relationship that fizzled out, but no harm done.

“I was seeing a girl for a while and one day she got a message from a dude from a reality TV show, asking her out on a date. I told her she should go, just to meet the guy for a bit of a laugh and a story and they’ve been dating ever since,” Lane explains.

Melbourne’s Telenova are back with “Lost In The Rush”. The vocals of Angeline Armstrong are front and centre again, and what is good news for fans, they have announced a regional tour kicking off in late April. Check the WEBSITE for details.

BLXST has today released his Just For Clarity 2 EP. It’s another quality release from the Grammy nominated artist. The focus track is “Passionate” and features fellow American rapper Roddy Ricch.

Dublin’s Fontaines D.C. have shared “‘Cello Song”, their offering from the forthcoming compilation tribute album The Endless Coloured Ways: The Songs of Nick Drake, which is out in July. The sign of a good cover is if the band can really make a track their own and Fontaines D.C. have really succeeded here. It’s a striking and powerful rendition of the Five Leaves Left track. There are echoes of the original there, but the band have put their own distinctive twist on the track and created a powerful and thoughtful tribute.
